Breakfast on the Bridge 2010, Come Play 2022 campaign

Breakfast on the Bridge 2010 | Come Play 2022 | Sydney Harbour Bridge

When construction on the Sydney Harbour Bridge began in the early 1900s, who would have thought that one day there would be people having a picnic on it, on real grass?

Last Sunday, workers began at 1am to cover the Harbour Bridge with real turf for the very first Breakfast on the Bridge event. It took in total 10 semi trailers to carry the 11,000 square meters required to cover all 6 lanes of the bridge, creating a unique green parkland suspended 50m over the harbour! As Sydney Event Photographers we were there to capture the event for magazine coverage.

Being the first event of its kind, entry to the event was done by lucky draw with family tickets up for grabs. At 6.30am the gates were thrown open to 6000 lucky winners of the draw, who quickly claimed their spots from which to watch the sunrise over the harbour. The picnickers were well equipped, bringing blankets and chairs. Some even brought portable stoves with which they cooked pancakes.

The team of Come Play 2022 was also there with giant inflatable soccer balls. They were the bid for Australia to host the 2018-2022 FIFA World Cup, and John Aloisi, Tim Cahill, and Premier Kristina Keneally were also present.

But the main event of the day was actually a surprise wedding! The groom had secretly organised a celebrant to arrive shortly after they settled down to their breakfast. Luckily, his partner of four years agreed to his proposal! But even the groom got a surprise when it started raining right in the middle of their ceremony! Luckily everyone was well prepared, as you could see with all the raincoats and umbrellas.
