Sydney Telstra 500 V8 Supercars 2011 | Sydney Olympic Park
The Sydney Telstra 500 was Sydney’s premier racing event. Consisting of a range of races, shows, exhibitions, and games, it took up the entire Sydney Olympic Park and surrounding roads. This was its third year in Sydney.
We were there over the 3 days as Sydney Event Photographers to cover the races and other entertainment for The ONE Magazine. It was an exciting event, and also the first where we had to sign a life waiver at the door.
There was media from all over Australia and the world covering the event, and it’s easy to see why. These powerful machines were amazing on TV, but when you’re standing an arm’s length away from them with a little concrete barrier in between, it’s a whole new level.
Even though we are talking about thick concrete blocks, when a car brushes against it at high speed, the block will jump a few inches. If you are occupying those few inches at that time, it could mean serious injury.
There were several races, with the main ones being the V8 Supercars, Carrera Cup, Touring Car Masters, V8 Ute Series. We also had the Armor All Auto Show, a few parades of monster cars, and entertainment from The Rockettes and The Chillettes.
